Two days ago, we hit the number one day for fall color in Wyoming. The aspen glowed bright gold against the sky, and seemed to burst like fireworks from the depths of our dark pine forest.
Fall Walk 083 (3)Now, they’re starting to fade. We had a windy day today, with tree limbs tossing and yellow leaves skittering across the ground as if trying to escape the coming winter.Fall Walk 019

Stillwater Aspen 2As the leaves flutter to the ground, the aspens’ ghostly green-white skeletons stand out starkly against the pines, warning of winter. But we’ll hold on to autumn a little longer here, with a retrospective of the best fall foliage Stillwater had to offer this year.IMG_3907

Believe it or not, I actually look forward to winter here at Stillwater. It’s a bit of a struggle, what with all the  hauling of firewood and staggering through snow, but it’s beautiful, and I love following tracks in the snow on my winter expeditions with the dogs.

I know we’ll have more warm days, though. Wyoming winters are full of surprises, offering Indian summer days when we least expect it.
